This is a question Social Networking Gaffes

Freddy Woo writes, "My school bully just friended me on Facebook!" No doubt he pokes him, and then demands his lunch money.

Personally, last month a scantily clad young woman confused me with her fiance, with whom I share a first and last name. I'm still not sure she's noticed, but she's going to be mortified when she does.

What's the biggest mistake you've made using a social networking site?

I must be the only web monkey who hates FaceBook...
I work in T'internet related fields, I use the net for a large proportion of my leisure time and I still loathe Facebook. And Myspace.

I think the problem is that Facebook especially promotes a level of narcissism that is rarely seen outside the realms of a Hollywood Diva. I mean, why should I give a toss what a friend-of-a-friend-of-a-friend-of-and-acquiantance-of-a-work-colleague is up to? I barely give a toss about what I'm doing, so what in god's name makes you think I care about your sad, trivial existence?!

And the applications. Oh god, the sodding applications. In one week, I've been sent Care Bears, Pirate names, a Pillow fight, fifteen quizzes, four crap games and the option to find out how kinky I am. Why? For the love of god, why? Don't poke me. If you aren't actually my wife and you poked me in the pub, it'd end badly for , so why do people think it's ok to annoy to shit out of me online?

I don't want a constant drip-feed of your activities - "barry is taking a shit", or "sandra is having a PMS day", etc - if I care enough to give a rats' ass about what you're up to, I'll call, or meet you, or email you and ask - that way we can have what we in the human race call a "conversation".

I'm tired of the inanity and I am glad that more and more workplaces are banning access to facebook. If they can only work on stopping ignorant mouth-breathers from playing music on their phones on public transport, I'd be a happy man!

/rant

p.s my Social Networking Gaffe is that whilst hating the pointless vacuity of Facebook, I firmly advocate the use of forums and social networks for groups of people with an actual interest to share (i.e fan sites, etc) - it's the lack of actual interesting content on Facebook that drives me insane...

Hahaha!
I like this:

"Don't poke me. If you aren't actually my wife and you poked me in the pub, it'd end badly"

I like you, Chad
I couldn't agree more.

The whole thing's so fucking 'look at me'.

MOST PEOPLE'S LIVES ARE FUCKING BORING AND OF LITTLE INTEREST TO ANYONE ELSE.

Mine is regularly of little interest to ME. The arrogance of blogging etc strikes me as staggering.

I DON'T WANT TO KNOW YOUR PSEUDO-WHIMSICAL OBSERVATIONS ON THE WORLD TODAY. FUCK OFF.

The end

I think the problem is these applications
are actually designed for women.

It's a bit like soap operas, yes men can sit down and watch them but they're not really for us.
We don't buy magazines discussing soap plots, or chat about soap charachters at work.

Same with BeMyFaceSpaceBookBo

A-fucking-men
The best bit is, when I chastise folk for being on Facebook they look at their feet and shuffle and go "well...y'know...it's just to keep in touch with mates, innit." If you're a vain posing shit at least be open about it.

Have only the second click
I've delivered this week!

These things are a monumental waste of time. If I want to know what my friends are up to, I'll ask them. I point blank refuse to sign up for any of these sites.

Web monkey #2 reporting in...
And yes, I share the same opinion on Facebook, Myspace, and the thousands of cheap mutant clones they spawned.

I keep a weblog of my own, but I try to be original, informative, and not talk about my daily doings every half hour.

Christ, people, I do *not* want to know details of any kind about the size and texture of your colon's latest dirty creation. Nor do I need to know you fantasized about sex with Brad Pitt 37 times in the last 4 hours.
(, Thu 18 Sep 2008, 11:28, closed)
make that 38 times...
seriously, though, I love a good blog as it's usually well-written and, whilst the subject may be niche (like my gaming/retro macintosh stuff), it's usually of interest. I like a good forum as you can get a lot of good advice from people with actual experience, I can always recommend signing up to pistonheads.com if you're into cars, for example, or warseer.com if you like wargames (i.e Warhammer, Confrontation, etc). You will find things to amuse, inform and help you.

Facebook brings nothing but triviality and the espousal of the idea that everyone should be a celebrity in some way. If you're 16, think, work in Morrisons and binge-drink, I might like to see you naked, but I certainly don't want to hear your views on "Who is fitter: Simon Cowell or That Bloke Off Eastenders?"...

Why don't you just delete your profile ?
Like I and every other non twat person did 2 weeks after realising how very gay it all is...
(, Thu 18 Sep 2008, 11:49, closed)
I did...
although my wife uses my Facebook as a way to show off the wedding pics (as I uploaded them for her before she had a profile). Other than that, it never gets used. My wife, on the other hand, could spend all night on the sodding site, as she giggles with glee when someone sends her the latest "Which My Little Pony Are You?" quiz, etc. I definitely think it's a girly thing...

I wish I could click and click and click and click
I hate the very devil of Facebook.

Last summer I was standing outside a pub, chatting with a friend of mine, enjoying the sun and a pint, and he told me I should join.

Why?

So we could "chat and stuff".

Ghrzhrhrffff!
