This is a question Stupid Colleagues

I was having this work conversation about marriage and things,
and on the subject of rings I said I really liked the idea (from the film The Abyss) of a titanium wedding ring. Anyway, Fuckwitcow (not her real name) blusters and starts calling me tight and a cheapskate, and the conversation breaks down as myself and the two mobile technician guys have no idea where she's getting this from.

It was about two days later that it occurred to me that perhaps she didn't know the difference between titanium and the cubic zirconia in her Lizzy Duke. If it's not that, then fuck knows...

My old physics teacher went down this route
He used the titanium from the bone pins he had put into his arm after a bike crash. I always wondered (though I never asked him) why he would commemorate his marriage with a reminder of a massive and painful accident...

Titanium is cheap though...
If you look at decent Gold, Platinum and "White Gold" rings then Titanium can look like a cheapskate choice.
Personally I like the idea of Titanium or Tungsten, but trying to find something suitably special that actually looks like a wedding ring is tough.
I've a great Tungsten wedding-style ring that, being heavier than the gold equvalent, feels great to wear -- but since you can get similar for £20 I won't be using it as a wedding ring. My investigations into Titanium ran into similar problems.

I'm going to get a tungsten ring when I get married later this year
the price is irrelevant, I want something I won't fuck up.

if you know somewhere to look for nice style rings I'd appreciate a gaz.

Unforunately I don't.
Tungsten rings are widely available and some are pretty decent looking -- but I've yet to find one that's special.
I'd love to get a Tungsten ring when I marry my GF but I think we'll end up with hand-made Scottish designer silver instead.

I think it's more important to get something that's valuable to you, too
I just got engaged, and the future Mr. Armadillo made my ring out of surgical grade stainless steel. Meant a lot more than a generic ring, and I won't be able to damage it while doing hydraulic-y stuff.

Exactly,
my wedding ring is silver with a very thing band of gold on it because we were skint at the time.

mine is going to be completely plain
and surely specialness is infused into it by the occasion and the circumstances of it being given.

plain jane ring
well as expressed by others it is the reason for the ring that is important to me,
my ring was the cheapest one in the Argos catalog but it means more.
so much more to me than mere money, however my wife chose a damned expensive ring from a proper jewelers, it does the same thing as mine but she was horrified when i told her it didnt matter what it cost it is what it means, couldnt see past her friends wanting to know how much it cost

I don't know if Biojewellery is still going...
but they had a project in which they'd take a sample of living bone tissue, and culture it on a lattice to grow a wedding ring.

This reminds me..
I have a question for the ambulance guys around here:

I have been told that titanium rings are a bad idea because they're too hard to cut off in an emergency, but then I've also been told that's crap and they're not really too much harder to cut than a thick gold ring. Which is it?
Ta :)

Probably not true
www.cascadiadesignstudio.com/faq-cut-off-ring.htm
"Many jewelers spread this rumor when titanium started to weaken their sales of more expensive bands. If titanium could not be cut, we wouldn't be able to make our rings in the first place using ordinary high-speed steel tools!"

I have a titanium wedding ring
It's got a thin inlaid line of gold, and looks nice. It's very, very strong (I can stand it on edge on the floor and jump on it without damaging it, and I'm about 16 1/2 stone). I'm rubbish and lose things all the time so I needed one I could safely leave on and not break sailing or whatever else I'd be doing. It's great, can't recommend it enough. No-one has ever looked at it and called me a cheapskate, it normally gets very favorable comments.

I'd like a titanium ring
...just think how hot the curries I could eat would be!
