This is a question Tightwads

There's saving money, and there's being tight: saving money at the expense of other people, or simply for the miserly hell of it.

Tell us about measures that go beyond simple belt tightening into the realms of Mr Scrooge.

money saving tip
A lot of you might know this one - instead of buying sugar, steal it.

No seriously...collect those little sugar packets at cafes, service stations etc. They're absolutely free. If you are really desperate, I'm sure the same logic also applies to salad cream, brown sauce etc etc.

I always pocket a few sachets of ketchup
as I hate to run out at home.

I get to stay
in some really questionable hotels thanks to my job, but have a nice collection of coffee, teabags, whitener, biscuits etc as a result.

I also order 1/2 a pint of Guinness with my room service dinner (if I'm being reclusive) and am on my way to a nice collection of Guinness glasses.

Admittedly the second part's more "theft", but meh.

Presumably the logic
also extends to cars, helicopters and yachts?
(, Mon 27 Oct 2008, 14:13, closed)
I think it applies only to consumables
since they'll be replacing these pretty quickly. Plus the per-unit loss is tiny.

Whereas with yachts they're losing a lot of money at a time- and wouldn't have expected to lose them!

Would you care if they used the same amount of sugar in their tea while in the room (i.e. if they nick 20 packs a time, would you mind if they had 5 4-sugar teas)? The hotel loses in exactly the same way.

Edit: The glasses don't class as theft because... err... they're probably promotional items from the brewery... or something.

Beer glasses
I am told by a barman that when you buy the drink, technically you also buy the glass. Not entirely convinced, but...

Apparently
this doesn't apply to hotel room furniture, bedding, fixtures, fittings...

So I'm told anyway. Ahem.

From end of tax year 2009/2010
there will be a new box where you may enter total costs of supplementary foodstuffs stolen.

This will be taxed as a benefit in kind.

Pens from Argos are excluded.

as are
pencils from IKEA

Thank crud for that
I've got so many, I rattle when I walk.

Where
did you put the pencils?

I've done this for years
- especially tea and coffee. I save them up and take them on holidays etc. If we go self-catering abroad it's far easier to take a dozen coffee sachets than a jar of coffee in your luggage.

...well if I'm honest
I've done it for years too. I particularly like those glass 'Bonne Maman' mini jamjars of marmalade, blackcurrant etc
