This is a question Tightwads

There's saving money, and there's being tight: saving money at the expense of other people, or simply for the miserly hell of it.

Tell us about measures that go beyond simple belt tightening into the realms of Mr Scrooge.

My father-in-law
First post, so be kind. My father-in-law is a kindly, 92 year old who, to be fair, does buy nice presents for birthdays, Christmas and other special occasions. But when it comes to the accompanying card, that's a different matter. Because we buy him a bumper box of Christmas cards, for him to send to all his friend and relatives, he tends to use them all year round. So for my birthday this year, I got a Christmas card with the word Christmas crossed out and the word Birthday written in pen over the top of it. He also tends to scribble out Santa's hat and beard. May be it's not "mean," just creative!

That's actually fucking funny
I'd copy your father-in-law if my relatives wouldn't ostracise me for it.

Your FIL is probably being "ironic"
Not quite as well as my friend though, who bought somebody a card with a picture of a lollipop lady and the message "Congratulations on your new job", which he crossed out with a biro and replaced with "Happy Birthday"...

Cards
My lunatic brother has managed to buy my son inappropriate (ie not birthday) cards for all of his eighteen years. The rest of us look forward to what occasion cards he'll get next, not really sure what my son makes of it though, even though he laughed like a drain at the "Passing your Driving test" one he got age 7.. or "Birth of your granddaughter" aged 9..

I wish!
No, my father-in-law is being cheap, but he always gets a chuckle when we open his cards. I, on the other hand, like to send "In Deepest Sympathy" cards to people of their 40th birthdays.

One (male) friend of mine...
...gave another (female) a 'Happy 50th' card on her eighteenth. She was not amused.

I dislike greetings cards, for they are overpriced and generally crap. I tend to send a small gift instead, should the occasion be warranted.

That's well cute!
Bless!
