No, they weren't.
Hugo Boss' company was, at that time, just a small clothing manufacturer who landed a nice fat Party contract to supply uniforms, along with several other companies. He/they didn’t have any creative input, they just churned out the officially approved designs. Nice work if you could get it, and you could get it by joining the Party, like Hugo, and doing some serious brown-nosing. A sound business decision, at the time.

I have never really understood that either.
I came to the conclusion that they're a bunch of cowardly morons with self-esteem issues which cause them to behave irrationally.
