My fury has led me to phrase it badly. My point was that "Trent Reznor wrote 'Hurt', not Johnny Cash" is always being touted as trivia known only to a well-informed few, whilst in fact the entire bloody planet must know it by now.

No, the real secret is different
It's that the NIN version is better live than Cash's studio version (which is famous for being better than NIN's studio one).

I agree in part.
But I'm still a NIN fan as I love the effort he puts into his music, even if it does repeat the same samples a lot recently.
My favorite NIN though has always been his covers or other people's remixes of NIN tracks -- I think auteurs generally get a bit stifled and need other input.
