Yesterday The Woman and I went to Thorpe Park. We went on Saw. It went fast and made my face go all funny.
I had to explain the theme behind the ride to The Woman; as she'd not seen Saw I had to explain all the torture device themes and scariness and whatnot. That led on to a big discussion about the role of horror films in cinema.
What is the point of watching something to be scared or grossed out or whatever? Watching Saw, is there really any legitimacy behind watching someone gouge their own eye out or saw their own foot off?
Alternative question: Piss off. The world doesn't revolve around you, despite the massive gravitational pull caused by your undoubted girth.

You watch it to be excited, have your heartrate raised, feel that exhileration behind being scared or shocked.
I think.
Or you really like gore.

I'm not that keen on the Saw ones after about number 3
they got a bit "shocking for shocking's sake", I think. The first one was the best, the surprise was kind of lost after that.

I've still seen the others though, I'm a bit of a completist like that. I knew they'd be shit as well.

I think those films are quite pretty in their own way. That's why I'd watch them.
The storyline to the saw movies, IMO, is shit, but the pretty pictures make up for it.

Saw (the first film) has a very good plot behind it, it's not just gore and horror.
The rest were just milking the gore fest cow.

Because the point in films is to stir up emotions,
be it horror, amusement or in the case of many hollywood films, boredom and depression.
