They've lied about it so long that now they believe it, in fact they have created it by giving fundmentalists an ideology and now a name. The group that did this in London calling themselves "Secret Organisation Group of al-Qaeda [literally the base] of Jihad Organisation in Europe" have not been heard of before. The whole al-Qaeda thing is just to breed a climate of fear to keep us in control.
