I might consider it if I was guaranteed to get the item by meeting the reserve price
but the fact that anyone can sign up as a seller, well, I just don't trust where my money is going to go.

oh right, fair enough. Just buy from 'repuatable' sellers- if they've sold a lot and have a high rating, its not a problem.
My friend does ebay selling full time (even owns a shop for it), everything she sells is legit and she makes a wedge from it. All above board and all that.
