recently had the same experience
I'd called a plumber about knocking noises happening when the cold bath tap was turned on and a leaky shower mixer. He quoted me £900 to completely replace bathroom and shower taps. Turns out most taps are made of very basic bits. The mixer and the bathroom taps both took these cartridges: www.amazon.co.uk/Tap-Cartridges/b?ie=UTF8&node=1939476031 (different sizes).

Total cost for me to fix both the knocking noise and the leaky shower - £27.50.
