I was with a female friend, and she was definitely in the minority. There were two Tolkien nerds behind us who had clearly paid to be upset about how unfaithful it was to the book. I asked them to pipe down a bit at the start when Galadriel's voice-over mentioned "the creature Gollum" ["The CREATURE?!?" one of them exclaimed, incredulously].
At the end, as the credits said "based on..." one of them yelled "based LOOSELY on the book by JRR Tolkien!"
tl;dr: even if all your sex has been cancelled out, it's still more than they ever had.

There are things I think PJ got wrong with the films, but on the whole they're pretty good.

Not including the Hobbit films, which were... unnecessary.

I understand the source material feels thin, sort of stretched, like butter scraped over too much bread.
