It has just occurred to me that I always thought the line in the Wombling Song was
"The Wombles of Wimbledon, common are we"

and I've only just realised that it's "Wimbledon Common", not that the Wombles themselves are common. Which one of you is Mike Batt, I need to have a word.

I thought that too!
Does it mean 'common' as in 'numerous', do you think? Or in the sense of working class?

I always assumed numerous, wouldn't have known the working class meaning when I was a small child.
But no, lyrics sites confirm it's capitalised so it's Wimbledon Common the place. I'm sure Batt made it intentionally ambiguous to confuse children, if I ever get my hands on him I swear down I'll do time.

Nonetheless, you were presumably aware that some of the kids at your school said "haitch" instead of "aitch" and lived in a house that smelled of cheap biscuits and unwashed dog.
