Grand! Apparently the creator made Mr. Benn's address 52 Festive road his next door neighbours house so that THEY'D get all the pillocks knocking on the door . . .

given my overt socialist views at the time and my complete abhorrence of religion. ( a belief in either a god or a guiding supreme being was kinda required )

It's not a secret society, it's a society with certain secrets,
pretty much operating in the same way as a golf club, say - but not with the funky plus-fours

I said "secretive", as in there are secrets. Which there are.
Now get back to your secret organisation and do some secret stuff

average lodge subs here are £100 annually, and a regular min. monthly donation of around £5 via DD or equivalent. There is also the collections at meetings etc and raffles, certainly no more than £25 per month on average for everything (in basic craft masonry), exc. the after-meeting meals and drinks.

but I turned them down because pretending to be religious in order to hang out with the sort of people who made Jim Davidson their Grand Poobah sounds like the equivalent of being cornered by an old relative at a family gathering and having to nod and smile while they regale you with their racist views

he really hasn't been any sort of poobah, grand or not.
Maybe master of his own lodge one year, but he's certainly not any national grand rank,
and he subsequently resigned from his masonic lodge after upsetting many others with his routine.

Which is hardly a sign that they're ashamed of the xenophobic bigot: www.freemasonrytoday.com/public/index-10.php
For a later issue:
"Jim Davidson’s masonic interests are now extensive. Apart from the Chelsea Lodge, he is the Immediate Past Master of the City of Westminster Lodge, founding Master of the British Forces Foundation Lodge, soon to become a Preceptor in Knights Templar and is a member of other Orders including, the Red Cross of Constantine and the Royal Order of Scotland."
[edit] he may have resigned from the Chelsea Lodge but the other stuff still stands

would that be me, as a mason?
he may be a (and I don't like the guy myself) xenophobic bigot, but you seem to be assuming he was allowed to be a mason because he was xenophobic and bigoted, which really is quite ridiculous.
he was on the cover in 1999, he resigned in 2002, and even if he is a member of the various side degrees etc. so what? He was pulled up by Grand Lodge for his off-colour routine in due process, he resigned.
Just because you don't like Davidson, (as I don't) don't assume that one facet of his life (masonry) is representative of all masons and their beliefs
