# Outspoken Union Leader of RMT (the railworkers and tube workers Union)
hated by Middle-Class sorts who complain if their train is running a nanosecond too late.
(, Wed 3 Nov 2010, 11:53, archived)
# to be fair, he's also hated by plenty of working class people for the same reason as well
(, Wed 3 Nov 2010, 11:54, archived)
# Depends on whether they share the views of the newspapers or not.
I know people get pissed off with me if my bus breaks down and I have to take it out of service, as if it's all my fault. So yeah there will be some working-class people who don't see beyond the end of thier noses.

# I'm not sure if unions are the same over there as they are here
but union bosses here tend to get rich on kickbacks and under-table handshakes rather than acutally representing people.

Is this man actually representing anyone except himself? I would be surprised. It takes a certain type of person to want to lead a union.
(, Wed 3 Nov 2010, 12:00, archived)
# I doubt very much he's getting any kind of kickback
he has sort of put himself at the head of all this (in the same way Arthur Scargill did with the miners) as the voice of the Union, which is one thing I don't particularly like about him but that could also be the way the media focusses on him rather than the Union to try to create that distorted view he's an egotistical bloathead.
(, Wed 3 Nov 2010, 12:04, archived)
# Being an egotistical bloathead is a prerequisite for any political leadership.
If someone isn't an egotistical bloathead they won't want the job.

# My brother's girlfriend works for LU
she's worked through every strike so far, stopping her usual duties to work on the platforms making sure as many stations as possible are open.
Not everyone who disagrees with you takes their opinion from the tabloids.

Some might be better informed than you.

# Also, Bob Crow represents one union
It's interesting that few of the other unions are striking in sympathy isn't it?
(, Wed 3 Nov 2010, 12:05, archived)
# Don't make this about me, please!
(, Wed 3 Nov 2010, 12:06, archived)
# I apologise, that was not my intention
but you were suggesting that only the ill informed and media-led were against the strike.

There's a large number of tube workers that disagree.
(, Wed 3 Nov 2010, 12:17, archived)
# Yes I retract that, that was me just getting a little upset with the way
I'm getting painted with the same brush as Bob Crow by simply defending that we need strong union leadership, maybe not as tactless as his leadership but certainly we can't afford to be scared of making a stand simply because it might be interpreted as being unpopular.

I'm a busdriver, as I'm sure everybody knows by now, and sometime we have to take the drastic step of taking strike action when we reach an impasse with the Management - and yes we feel sorry for people who can't get to work, or can't get to appointments or shopping and such but we have to take that step when it's necessary, which doesn't mean everytime we want a pay-rise.

# I like buses
and that TSCHHHH noise they make that startles old ladies
(, Wed 3 Nov 2010, 12:34, archived)
# Airbrakes FTW!
also with older buses you get that lovely singing noise from the brake pads when you're slowing braking at lights.

# I have discovered that the high-pitch beeping the doors make on bendy buses
is ear-shattering when heard through a mobile phone.

Bob Crow is giving the unions a bad name

# I've rarely had any trouble with bus drivers
other passengers, yes.
Those people that take 'passenger surveys' then get annoyed when I refuse to let them scan my oyster, yes.
Whoever is in charge who decides to shorten the damn bus route while I'm on it then expects me to pay again to complete my journey, yes.

But rarely drivers - I've probably encountered about 2 or 3 dicks driving buses since I've been in London, pretty good in six years.
(, Wed 3 Nov 2010, 12:38, archived)
# Actually the driver can stop those people doing surveys on their buses especially if it's unauthorised.
I've never had it on my bus, but I know a few drivers who have stouted back at people doing surveys or leafletting on buses and told them if they continue to disturb passengers they will be asked to leave the bus.

Some bus drivers can be dicks - we know the ones who seem to get their kicks by being arseholes over passes and such most of the time they can overlook these little details.

lovely book

# It's quite funny, she gets so much abuse on strike days
30% annoyed that she's on strike (she's not)
30% annoyed that she's not on strike
40% angry and confused because they've lived in London for years and haven't figured out how buses work or how different parts of the place relate to each other at street level.

# 1% foreigners going "Is this way to Manchester?"
(, Wed 3 Nov 2010, 12:37, archived)
# Foreigners are usually fairly polite.
Businessmen who've worked in the city for years and never stopped to wonder how one gets from Victoria to Bank without the tube - less so.
