Another tip is to try to select an image that's a similar resolution to the one you're pasting into, then it won't look so blurry.
Or use the 'sharpen' tool, but that can only go so far.

when you say "soft edged eraser" do you mean the blur tool?

What is meant by a soft edge earser is, click on the easer tool, and then select a soft edged brush, I don;t know how to do this in gimp, but it might be right click the properties of the brush and select of there maybe options in the toolbar once you have selected eraser...
Any gimp users here know how to do it?

delete/clone to sort out bad bits. Colour balance also works, but need a lot more practise.

But they should be similar,
In photoshop. if you click on image in the tool bar, you'll gat a drop down box, select adjustments and in there you will have tools called, colour balance, hue and saturation, selective colour and channel mixer, the all do pretty much the same job of changing the hue and colour of layers but in slightly different ways, click on these options and just have a play about with them, the more you play the easier it becomes.
Also try blending you object in with a soft edged eraser, this can quite offten take away a hard edge.
Also adjusting the contrast and brightness of the added layer so it matches the base layer also helps...

But in photoshop when you click on hue and saturation,
When the box appears, appart fron the sliders for hue and satuation, there is an edit box at the top where you can choose which colour you want to edit, like master meaning all the colours, or just the reds or greens or blues ect.... it is really useful to be able to edit individual colours....
