# haven't phones had voice stuff for ages?
I don't keep up with these things, but could have sworn the phone I had 5 years ago would let me ring numbers by saying names and stuff.

# NO - APPLE HAVE INVENTED IT
JUST LIKE THEY INVENTED THE WHEEL
(, Wed 5 Oct 2011, 14:49, archived)
# Yeah, and like they invented mp3 players by calling them 'ipods' and making them expensive.

Im modeling a hand. I hate modeling hands.

# how the fuck do thumbs do that?
where do they start?
that can't be right?
etc
(, Wed 5 Oct 2011, 15:00, archived)
# Thumbs are difficult
they're at an angle from the rest of the fingers I suppose that's why they are called Opposing Thumbs.
(, Wed 5 Oct 2011, 15:07, archived)
# I actually wrote a tutorial on hand modelling many years ago for 3d world magazine

great story :D
(, Wed 5 Oct 2011, 15:49, archived)
# I've seen some online tutorials
I know I'm no great shakes as a modeller but the idea of doing fiddly details like fingers and such is off-putting rigging hands is also a pains from what I've read.
(, Wed 5 Oct 2011, 16:13, archived)
# I used to have a nice hand rigging script.
Which I obviously lost, because it was fucking useful and I'm not allowed to keep nice things.

# The big thing is it's supposed to understand plain spoken commands..
e.g. "where is the local train station?"
"what is the weather like?"
"where is the nearest library?"
"what's that smell from my underpants?"
That sort of thing.
But more than likely it will just phone someone you don't want to speak to like most voice command phones do.
(, Wed 5 Oct 2011, 15:00, archived)
# I bet it only understands merkin.

# I'd like to see a Geordie use one...
"wye aye man, wheres the chippie like?"

# Android phones have voice recognition/dictation thingy
I tried mine out recently by trying to make a note through voice recognition. The note says,

"The link cable is the links TV or resource you understand the links"

You may make of that what you will.

# /makes a rather fetching hat

# Yeah, but now APPLE have done it so everyone suddenly cares.
They'll probably start retrospectively suing anyone who has made phones with voice dial now.
(, Wed 5 Oct 2011, 14:51, archived)
# mine has 2-way speech
all I have to do is call someone, speak into the phone and it digitises my voice. Now, the clever bit is, once the digitised voice reaches the other person, their phone de-digitises it and the phone speaks to them as if it was me!

Clever huh!
(, Wed 5 Oct 2011, 14:57, archived)
# I think it would be cooler if it stayed digitised so everyone would think you were a robot.

# So far Apple have invented:
1: Phones
2: The letter 'i' didn't exist until Apple said it was ok
3: MP3 players
4: Computers
5: Colours, especially black and white, although they invented the other colours as well.
6:...
7: PROFIT

# From a nerdy standpoint..
Apple didn't "invent" the computers, but they certainly made them more friendly (smug)

But as much as I do tend to hate them, they do tend to change the game whenever they "make a leap"
(warning leap making may be stolen from other companys and portrayed like a new wheel)
(, Wed 5 Oct 2011, 15:04, archived)
# Apple iLeap?
(, Wed 5 Oct 2011, 15:09, archived)
# OOOOOOoooooooooooooo
Your gonna get sued! they own the lower case "i" followed by any capital letter!

# I don't find anything friendly about a computer that costs up to a months salary, demands your bank details when you first log on and refuses to let you do anything it doesn't want you to.
Made by a company who want to sue anyone that might sell you a cheaper computer that actually does what you want.

# haha, this!
I have an iPod, but that's it. I have an Android tablet instead. I give my money to GOOGLE!

# I like the idea of google, but the cloud thing puts me off....
If i'm not near wifi or 3G i'd be stuffed...

Can't you upload files to your sheep?

# just think of the sheep as little clouds with legs
just think of shagging each sheep as peer to peer network "transfer"

# Google seem to be heading the same way as Apple.
I like my android tablet but the web browser crashes every 5 seconds.
May have to switch back to windows once 8 comes out.
(, Wed 5 Oct 2011, 15:21, archived)
# They don't let you do anything you want to do because you know about "computers"
But for your thick internet fwapper/twitterer/git/DTPer they are a godsend!

And even though I hate to admit it, they are infinitely more stable than windows.
please don't lecture me on linux, I don't like it, it smells funny on my hard drive.
(, Wed 5 Oct 2011, 15:17, archived)
# They're only more stable cos you can't install anything interesting on them.
And I hate the way you can't just use an iphone / ipod like an external disk and copy onto and off it, you have to 'sync' through fucking itunes. My gfs iphone broke and it took me hours trying to work out how to save the messages off it for her.
(, Wed 5 Oct 2011, 15:29, archived)
# I must say though, I've got W7 on two machines and it's yet to have a massive hissy.
Trouble with Windows is it has to try and be all things to all people, whereas OSX says you will do it our way or not at all. Quite a lot of Windows instability comes from the programs people try to run on it (speaking as someone who was trying to run a piece of software written for Windows 3.1 on W7. It didn't work).
(, Wed 5 Oct 2011, 15:32, archived)
# so dumbing down the masses further is the way to go?
(, Wed 5 Oct 2011, 15:34, archived)
# I don't think that's the point though.
The point is that in general people shouldn't have to be part time IT Support personnel in order to browse the internet. Which is what it can be like running some operating systems. Besides, most people seem to be happier with Windows or Android anyway, preferring to sacrifice simplicity of use for a cheaper way of computing, so despite all the noise and attention they get, they're nowhere near market leader (apart from in tablets, but probably not for long there either).
(, Wed 5 Oct 2011, 15:38, archived)
# only thing that ever made my xp machine crash was apple software

(, Wed 5 Oct 2011, 15:34, archived)
# No, they nicked/bought DOS
off someone else, renamed it MS Dos and sold it to IBM as the operating system for the PC.

(, Wed 5 Oct 2011, 15:04, archived)
# Ha. I loved my philips savvy when I first got it on pay as you go, then after a few years I began to hate it but it refused to die.
Had to finish it off with a vice eventually and pretend it had broken by itself so I could finally get a new one.
