I'm frantically downloading all the klezmer I can find in order to find what is worth buying.
I was aware of klezmer when I discovered Orphic Oxtra a couple of years back, now is the time to investigate thoroughly.

I saw the Klezmatics in Seattle a while back, they were on a Hanukkah tour (doing their Woody Guthrie songs as well as some crazy Freilechs! )
BTW, one of my tubas was previously owned by a member of the Berkeley Klezmorim (one of the first klez revival bands.)

Would love to see them live some day. Have you heard Salomon's Klezmer in Swing album?

How about the New Orleans Klezmer All-Stars ? Their original drummer was Funk legend Mean Willie Green, now is Stanton Moore from Galactic on drums, also Ben Ellman on sax. Link is to a short documentary.

I saw these two bands last night/this morning:
www.youtube.com/watch?v=9bbs9-RiIpU (risque, but SFW)
www.youtube.com/watch?v=RojVY2MHnNU (yes, it was just about like this.)
wild night!

Gatherings of all sorts of strange (mostly brass and percussion) groups from all over the world - honkfest.org in Boston, Seattle and Austin. There is a very full band list with links on the site.

Might check some of the links if I get time though. Trouble is there are so many musics I like it's hard to explore them all.

and I was a non-commercial radio DJ for about 30 years. My show evolved into a 3 hour world alt.brass and jazz orgy every week!
For some other brass strangeness, try Lester Bowie Brass Fantasy (or a homage band Dave Douglas Brass Ecstasy )
or even more goofy and outside: Sex-Mob!

I've got this stereotypical image stuck in my head that all tuba players are flabby and bald with a cheery disposition

I have seen all size and kinds of tuba players - one of the best was a 5 ft tall Japanese High School student from Kyoto (Their band played with us in an Osaka music festival and parade.)
It takes a bit of air to play tuba and if one is marching around or dancing while playing it can be a work-out!
Tuba players are known for drinking a lot of beer for some strange reason - maybe that has something to do with the cheery disposition. It is a fun instrument, although orchestral tubists don't get much excitement - the rest of us usually have a good time.

1.) I imagine they are expensive, I am poor.
2.) I am unsure my front door is wide enough.
3.) I am unsure my lips are wide enough.
I am underweight and generally sullen, in the past I imagined these factors were my primary obstacles to tuba excellence.

If you find a used one (don't worry about germs - the horn can be cleaned out. ) Not sure where you are located, but eBay or the like often have reasonable horns pretty cheap, also check for old school instruments or Salvation Army horns.
The door size is usually not a problem unless you live in some sort of closet. Is your door 28" wide? Most tubas will fit easy.
Lips - that is the question! Some people just can't learn to do it because of that, but I think it is a rare problem. If there is a brass music shop around, ask to try playing one - see what happens.
edit: there are also student size tubas and "half-size tubas" called Euphoniums or Baritones that are also good to play. The mouthpiece is smaller and the horn don't weigh as much - give that a try too.
Underweight and sullen - not an issue. I have a friend who is in that category - she played tuba for many years in a "real" band - got paid good money! A lot of the people in the Honk! bands I mentioned earlier are poor radical punks or shoegazers that all of a sudden figured out they could play a horn (with almost no training) and have a lot of fun doing it. If you are in a large city or even a small town I bet there are other people who already playing in some sort of alt.brass band.
BTW, that picture is a Japanese WW2 anti-aircraft sound detector - a giant hearing aid...
