I think I mistook it for another film from around then that I hadn't seen, but I don't know know what that might be.

I watched it all the way through
and by the end I was so fucking livid that I added Tom Cruise to my list of actors that I will not watch. It's a list of precisely two at the moment, the other being Robin fucking bastard Williams.

*returning from IMDB*
The last Jim Carrey movie I saw was Eternal Sunshine, which wasn't too bad. I've seen Man on the Moon and Truman Show as well, neither of those are terrible.
Films I didn't even know he was in: Dead Pool and Earth Girls Are Easy.
There's nothing on the level of What Dreams May Come or anything in the Cruise ouvre there, sorry.

And Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is a fantastic film.
So, all in all, I think he gets by.
But fuck me, most Robin Williams films could turn Mr Happy suicidal.

People think he's funny but his skills are as you said:
1. Talks and acts manically
2. Pulls faces
3. Er
4. That's it

Which is why he was paid 1/3 more than your average actorrr

In particular, the old radio series "I'm sorry, I'll read that again".
Interesting fact : the 25th anniversary episode is possibly the only time he's performed the silly walk on radio.

don't make me laugh, I'm on a conference call with some apparently important Americans

I liked the atmosphere, the feeling through the film of "I know something odd is going on here and can't wait to find out what".
I liked the STORY. Remember those? Stories?

I just saw whining and crappy nightclub scenes and Tom Cruise trying to act like The Elephant Man

in case anyone hadn't seen it. I didn't want to spoil it.
It's a very good story. One of those films you have to pause if you're going to make a cup of tea because there are clues scattered throughout.
It's one of those films where I said "OMFG" when the plot was revealed at the end.

Go onto imdb and all will be revealed, saving you the bother.

but I preferred his film over Abre Los Ojos because Cruise's smug self-satisfaction and fall from his privileged position is what really drives the story - I didn't get quite the same sense of that with an unfamiliar actor.
