Five people have been injured when a badger

went on a
48-hour rampage in a suburb.

The Worcestershire Badger Society said the creature,
which has since been put down, left one victim needing
skin grafts after launching the 'unprecedented' attacks
last Thursday and Friday.

Society chairman Mike Weaver said he was called by
police to trap the mammal - which is thought to have
escaped or been stolen from a wildlife centre - after
it attacked a young man in the Greenhill area of
Evesham.

'I have never heard of anything like this in 24 years
of work with badgers throughout the UK,' said Mr Weaver.

He acknowledged that injured badgers or those which
were being handled had been known to bite humans, but
attributed its 'uncharacteristic' behaviour to the fact
it had been kept in captivity prior to its period of
freedom.

'For them to attack people is unheard of,' Mr Weaver
added.

'This badger had no fear of humans and it shows the
folly of trying to keep wild animals as pets.'

The most seriously injured casualty, a middle aged man,
required skin grafts at a Birmingham hospital after
being savaged by the animal, which had taken refuge in
his garage.
