# not eating regularly slows down your metabolism
And also, if you are eating a substantially less amount of calories than your daily recommended intake, then your body goes into a starvation mode, whereby it holds on to fat for dear life in the fear that it won't be getting any more for a while.

# Ah but I'm probably about right for the RDA on calories...
I'm just going to have to bite the bullet and start liking healthy food aren't I...

# Nothing wrong with healthy food.
It's very easy to make vegetables or fish tasty and healthy.

# Vegetables and fish...
My two pet hates flavour-wise...
(, Tue 12 Feb 2008, 12:36, archived)
# But vegetables are amazingly diverse,
you can't hate all of them, surely?

# or meat
meat can be healthy if prepared properly

and mr Doom, people like you confuse me more than vegetarians and people who don't like mushrooms

FISH IS THE LUFFEH

# Fish is brilliant.
I only recently discovered the joys of mushrooms, after years thinking I didn't like them.
I feel foolish now, so many wasted years.
edit: and yes, if you get a lean cut of meat it's perfectly healthy

# Meat is the best thing ever...
And no, it's not ALL veg - root veg are quite nice, but brassica and legumes can fuck right off.

As for fish, only the least fish tasting fish can be paleted, it's just too much for me...

# Fair enough, my girlfriend is quite similar.
A year ago she'd only eat onion, potatoes and peppers.
I've managed to convert her to just about all root veg, squashes and a few other things.
Still working on brassica and legumes though. And any kind of fish.

# are you doing any exercise?
(, Tue 12 Feb 2008, 12:35, archived)
# I get about 40 mins very brisk walking done a day...
But that probably doesn't count somehow...

I also leap around a lot whenever I have a rehearsal / gig...
(, Tue 12 Feb 2008, 12:41, archived)
# 40 mins walking a day is plenty of excersise
coupled with better eating. If you want to speed things up, start doing some moderate weight training too.
(, Tue 12 Feb 2008, 12:45, archived)
# weights?
Won't that make me all butch and muscular though?

That's kind of the point isn't it....
(, Tue 12 Feb 2008, 12:51, archived)
# Nope
Biggest misconception when it comes to weight loss is that cardio is the most important element. Moderate Weight training will increase lean muscle mass, which eats up extra calories. You don't need to go mad and try to get really beefy... unless you want to that is.
(, Tue 12 Feb 2008, 12:58, archived)
# No.
If you do light weights, but lots of repetitions you'll go slim and wiry.
It's only lifting big heavy weights that turns you into a meathead !

# This is what I typically eat on a daily basis:
Breakfast: Porridge

Snack: Fruit or low fat yoghurt

Lunch: Chicken sandwich with low fat mayo, bag of reduced fat crisps, low fat yoghurt.

Snack: Fruit

Dinner: Anything I would normally eat really, as long as the portions are reduced. I try avoid fried foods etc though. (but still treat yourself every now and again)

This combined with going to the Gym 3 times a week has lost me a stone since Xmas.

The big thing to remember is that it's not what you eat that is the problem - it's HOW MUCH you eat. The easiest diet in the world is eat what you normally would, but half the portion size.
(, Tue 12 Feb 2008, 12:37, archived)
# ...and because it's half the size...
...you can have twice as much!

# My day goes as:
7am - Gym - Weights (4 times a week)
Breakfast - porrige/Wheatabix + protein shake
no morning snacks
Lunch - Sandwich or salad (lots of lean meat/tuna for protein
Snack - apple + harvest bar
Run - 6 miles plus (3 times a week)
Dinner - Grilled chicken/steak other meat plus a mountain of veg and a pile of carbs.

When i first started this i lost 1 kg a week for 6 weeks, and then maintained a nice healthy weight.

snacking is the real killer when it comes to weight loss, so i try to stave off hunger with drinking lots of water and tea. It's lunch and I've already drank 4 pints of water, 2 cups of tea and a can of diet coke. Loo breaks stop me working too hard and break up the day!
