as long as it's under 50k, we tend to go with 280px as it looks ok on the board, generally it's going to be under the 50k and we're fp whores.
i would steer clear of huge images as the can be a pain in the arse if you have to keep scrolling all over the show to see them, about 600px wide max is my limit, mostly

The picture wasn't too wide for the board but it would have been too wide if you'd been lucky enough to get it on the front page.
