Still, you've got to love him.

# Well indeed
Quietly outlasting every other broadcaster in the known universe - and knowing his subject. Not very many jokes however.

# Absolutely not, as he's a racist old git who's on record
as making extremely distasteful remarks about the Irish, Scots and Muslims
(, Tue 4 Mar 2003, 13:08, archived)
# Yeah
But he's 80. All old people are racist, sexist and have little or no respect for people of other religions. It's just the way of the world. They don't know no better.

# Are there any people aged 80 that *aren't* mad
racists? I think you'd be hard pressed to find one.
(, Tue 4 Mar 2003, 13:12, archived)
# True. My grandad was a copper in Dublin in the 20s and 30s and fought against the fledgling
Irish Fascist Movement, not just cos it was his job but because he believed in fighting fascism. And yes, he moved steadily to the right till he became a right old racist. Called an African girlfriend I had when I was 16 or so a 'piccaninny' to her face, which was a laugh and a half, I can tell you. And of course, like all Irishmen of that era, was very anti-English...
