Hollywood rant after thinking back to Die Hard: Hollywood. When depicting people crawling through ventilation systems, do a bit of a background check by looking at the state of existing ventilation systems. They are filled to the brim with crap, dust, bugs, cobwebs, etc etc, and are not shiny clean implements to transport air only.
Also, Lifts do not freefall as often depicted. They are fitted with brakes to ensure this doesn't happen in the event of ALL connecting suspension being severed. Hollywood rant over

The vent system will of course be installed before the building is signed off and cleaned up ready for use. You'll get building dust etc in the air, and transferred when the system is tested.

Yes, in that case, it would be spanking new and clean - but you mentioned an entire new building. once installed however, a system does not remain as shiny as Hollywood would have us believe.

We had an entire 3 hour lecture on discussing various building/construction plotholes in the movies, and how they should work in the real world.

Someone invented emergency liftbrakes in the late 19th century for christ's sake.
