# I can just picture Palin with the comment 'Ho Ho Ho, Now I have a Machine Gun'
Hollywood rant after thinking back to Die Hard: Hollywood. When depicting people crawling through ventilation systems, do a bit of a background check by looking at the state of existing ventilation systems. They are filled to the brim with crap, dust, bugs, cobwebs, etc etc, and are not shiny clean implements to transport air only.
Also, Lifts do not freefall as often depicted. They are fitted with brakes to ensure this doesn't happen in the event of ALL connecting suspension being severed. Hollywood rant over

# If it was a brand spanking new building, you'd still get a reasonably dirt vent. system.
The vent system will of course be installed before the building is signed off and cleaned up ready for use. You'll get building dust etc in the air, and transferred when the system is tested.

# What if it was a brand new building with the original vent system ripped out
and a new vent system put in, and not used yet?

# keep plugging away.
Yes, in that case, it would be spanking new and clean - but you mentioned an entire new building. once installed however, a system does not remain as shiny as Hollywood would have us believe.

# When I did the whole 'educational' bit for getting where I am now.
We had an entire 3 hour lecture on discussing various building/construction plotholes in the movies, and how they should work in the real world.
It spoils the magic knowing the truth.

# I always wondered about the point of freefalling lifts in movies.
Someone invented emergency liftbrakes in the late 19th century for christ's sake.

# You'd think hollywood would have caught up by now.
the whole freefalling lift thing has been done to death - so to speak

# Maybe they should do the same thing, but with escalators.
"Shit the motors have been cut. This escalator, IS GOING NOWHERE!"
