Go to the Maxon website and download the Cinema4D demo.
Then go to C4dcafe dot com and follow the tutorials (modelling a character is a good start).
I've been doing it for about a year now and it's bloody addictive!
Edit: Also expensive as I ended up buying the full release and all the modules!
