Artemis Fowl?!?!? He can fuck right off :)
I will buy the new book, and read it with clenched teeth throughout no doubt. Still, the thought of it is depressing me greatly at the moment.
Also I know Stephen Fry was his great mate and everything but why produce a new book about endangered animals with the EXACT SAME TITLE AS THE OLD ONE? FFS!

And why are you watching it?
*wikipedias* oh, I see. Is there a book of the TV series based on the book, then?

Most of those are.

He might be a great novelist but if that was the case then why resort to plagiarism?

is an Irishman with a silly name who wrote books about a teenage criminal with a silly name. And plagiarism is a great gig if you're getting paid for it, I don't think I'd have turned it down knowing how many people would buy the book.
Which I strongly suspect I will, whether I actually want to or not.

Plagiarism and being paid for it is called "Licensing" I suppose.

And when it's Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson doing it it's called "Raping Frank Herbert's corpse until it squeaks"

Colf, vb. to mangle, destroy or embarrass.
Mind you Mostly Harmless and The Salmon of Doubt were both a bit rubbish, so good luck to him, really.

this might be a lot better than everyone's expecting. when he can leave off the heavy-handed ecological ranting colfer has a pretty easy, light style and a decent imagination and perhaps unlike a lot of people (or at least that they'll admit) i really enjoyed most of the artemis fowl books while i was lying around in hospital.
on the other hand, it might really, really suck. let's be honest, the last three of the hitch-hiker's books weren't themselves all that great cop either...

Zaphod stepped out onto the surface of the planet, except he didn't because there was nothing there because the Vogons WHO ARE A METAPHOR FOR HUMANS had fucked it all up with bulldozers and heavy industry LIKE YOU HUMANS ALWAYS DO AND YOU SHOULD FEEL BAD BECAUSE YOU ARE A HUMAN AND NOT A DOLPHIN. (Free preview of the forthcoming book.)

Also: Douglas wrote one really great book which breathed new life into a stale genre. The book spawned a large number of mostly inferior imitators, Douglas himself among them. LOL

but i'd suggest not actually having "don't panic" tattooed on your arm at all

Although personally I don't think I'd have it done in block letters, I'd maybe just get the outline done.

but it takes wearing your nerdiness on your sleeve to hitherto unseen levels. it's fine saying "don't panic" to the squaddie in the pub but less fine when he follows you home later and smashes your teeth out against the pavement
edit: also, i agree, the outline would probably look be better if you actually do want it written on your arm -- stops it looking quite so faded so quickly if nothing else

but DNA has been a constant in my life since I was 10 years old. And that's quite a long time. I realised recently that an appreciation of HHGTTG has accidentally been requisite in all the major relationships of my time on the planet.

and you're happy to explain yourself (or just ignore people) every time you go out in a t shirt, then i'd go right ahead then.
i'm just wary because of thought quite a few times of getting a tattoo and then each time been glad a few weeks later that i didn't because it would've looked rubbish...
