I do soemtimes defend gypsies/travellers, etc., partly because there are some in part of the family and it's wrong to paint them all with the same brush, etc. etc.
But in truth, you are basically describing the standard attitude to the law: "We can ignore it because it's our culture". Which is.... questionable.

isn't that everyone's attitude to the law?
most folk just keep to the laws they agree with and ignore the laws the disagree with. for most people it's speeding in their car or smoking a bit of weed or whatever.
some cultures or groups of folk are bound to have a different set of laws they're happy to keep to while disregarding the rest.
