John Lanchester on the current Greek SNAFU.
It's not pretty.

Is there a TL:DR version?
My eyes started to glaze over and found myself grateful to all those swivel eyed loons that campaigned all the "Save the pound" stuff.

tl/dr greeks are all corrupt and still don't want to pay their taxes
This won't affect the EU at all, except in the short-term, as share/currency prices drop a little due to harmful speculation.
It won't really affect the greeks after the short-term either. Iceland defaulted on all its debts after the financial and its totally recovered and has its credit rating back again.
Money - Its all a load of bollocks and make believe anyway
Nb: I don't think greeks are all corrupt, but that's the implication at the start of the article

Ta.
So Greek crashing out would affect other countries struggling with large debts and be seen as an easy way out?

Yes...ish
The whole thing is really scaremongering as the banks *really* don't like people defaulting on big debts because it exposes the house of cards in which all money/debt is housed - So they say "You can't do that, the world will end!"

They are lazy though... still not finished that bloody Acropolis
and throwing the crockery on the floor at the end of every meal to get out of the washing up has cost them dearly.

I love Lanchester's writing on the economy
"Whoops" was very good on the financial crisis, if you haven't read it. His novels aren't bad either.

I was pretty nonplussed with his restaurant reviews - especially given that A Debt to Pleasure has to be one of the best food related novels ever written.
Edit: The Debt to Pleasure darn it.

No it couldn't
Spain and Portugal's economies are far less cause for concern now than four years ago. They're not great, but they're not staring down the barrel.

Not literally, more of a general comment on the Greek issues.
You're no Robert Peston.
