This is a link post Can you hear the difference between different prices of cello?
I didn't think I could but when I listened there were very obvious improvements. Not sure the last one is worth four houses, but there you go.

This is a normal post what is it with chicks and cellos? Apart from yo yo ma it's been wall to wall fish paste sandwich for the last 50 year

This is a normal post No, I really can't see the appeal of tightly gripping a rumbling resonant hunk between my thighs and utterly controlling its every sonorous tone.

This is a normal post There are so many variables on these things
I don't know why anyone does these spot the difference vids, because so much is dependent on the quality of the equipment you're listening on. Yes, you may be able to spot the difference, but does that difference appear better just because you've been told one is very expensive?

For what it's worth, I thought she was out of tune.

This is a normal post Not just the quality of the equipment you're listening with.
But also the quality of equipment the video has been recorded with.
Regardless of both these factors, the video is being hosted by YouTube who are notorious for compressing the quality of their audio streams to reduce bandwidth/storage overheads.

I'd imagine that 90-ish% of the folk watching that video are doing so on their phones. A large percentage of them using their shitty apple earpods.

And even with all those variables aside, the cost of an instrument isn't necessary commensurate with its tone. Mexican Fender Standard Precision basses often sound a hell of a lot better than their American Standard counterparts.

Rantlet over.

This is a normal post It's worthless as a study because it wasn't blind, let alone double blind.
Her performance would have been influenced by her knowledge of the value of the cellos. She would have handled the $1,000,000 cello a lot more carefully than the $5000 cello, and expected certain nuance from the more valuable ones, etc, etc.

Does that mean I shouldn't decide whether or not to buy a million dollar cello based on a Youtube video?

This is a normal post More research is needed before your question can be answered with adequate levels of certainty.

This is a normal post the million dollar one
has noticeably less resonance (or ringing). you could hear that on a much worse quality recording too I'm sure.
