Either he intended the message to only be seen by Jess Philips,
or he intended it to be seen by his followers, and he must know that his fans will pile on because they always do. I mean, why else would he put "Please do not contact the subjects of any of my videos, ever" on his YouTube channel if he wasn't looking to shirk responsibility for something he knows will happen anyway - it's a shitty disclaimer. And if he didn't expect his fans to see the message, what response do you think he wanted to his 'joke' in the first place?

He's a bully. Most bullying behaviour is technically 'jokes' - bullies laugh when they bogwash someone. I'm not sure when something being a joke became an excuse for anything. I wouldn't read it as a *literal* rape threat, but I would read it as malicious communications.

There's no threat there. There's no profanity. According to case law it would not be considered grossly offensive. The only thing it actually contains is an implication that she's ugly. I think you'd need some pretty interesting chicanery to actually classify this as abuse from a legal standpoint.

I dunno about American media, it's always seemed a load of guff to me.
But as an example of the problem the media has in the UK, take a look at the coverage of this Danny Baker tweet. Pretty much every story directly calls him racist, with the reader's interpretation of the message being confused with the sender's intent. Essentially the media as a whole has constructed a strawman with his name on it. He's guilty of crimes that he's committed in other people's imaginations, and that's all that matters.

Any entertainment organisation can fire anyone at any time, on the basis of public opinion... from a commercial point of view an entertainer's entire purpose is to be popular, and if they're not popular it is not tenable to keep them (though they should have just said that, rather than pretending the tweet was racist).
The problem is intentionally selecting the worst possible interpretation of some facts specifically to paint someone in a bad light, and shouting down any attempt by a person to clarify what they mean because that would require the media to admit that they'd jumped to conclusions and got it wrong.
He mentioned the trustpilot scores of the top 3 television news organisations and none of the papers, but they're not on his side in the slightest. The daily mail has wasted no time; they've already smeared him as a pedo... as has the sun and the mirror. He was referring to all of them, and they know that and they've brought out the biggest gun they can.

Incidentally I've not watched him much. Just this and maybe half of two other videos, which were considerably less interesting.
I don't think there's any particular risk to my critical faculties, since I don't really agree with much of what I heard. But I'm not prepared to dismiss everything someone says out of hand just because of other things they've said or who they associate with, and that goes equally for this guy as it does for people at the other end like John McDonnell.

But they're more intelligent than their broadsheet counterparts, with added ruthlessness and they (unlike a YouTuber) genuinely shape opinion. For anyone in public life, they are to be feared above all else.
There's no equivalent in America, so Trump sailed through. But in the UK, no-one insults the tabloids with impunity (except Coogan and Hugh Grant, whose careers are set and who both know the worst is out there). UKIP are fucked now. And Farage - who's wise to the game, and who is a very great deal more sinister than Akkad/Dankula - slips effortlessly into the voice of Brexit reason and, soon perhaps - blessed be the day - into power...
