This is a normal post Carousels could be used in certain situations.
I think, like most web things, they are used for the sake of using them and used incorrectly. Much like every company "needs" an app.

This is a good take on how a carousel could be used uxmovement.com/navigation/why-users-arent-clicking-your-home-page-carousel/

This is a normal post Yet tellingly
doesn't include any data to back up the claims that it would be better.

This is a normal post Yes probably bollocks.
Personally I don't use them (bar 1 site that I'm ordered to by those above). Like I said below they make sense for a photo site as a slide show but not much else. BUT EVERYONE MUST HAVE ONE!!!!

This is a normal post Bootstrap seems to be slowly taking over from the homepage carousel
for how a modern site MUST LOOK, even though that look seems to have become popular more through lazy development than usability testing.

This is a normal post "I want my company to stand out but it must look exactly like this"

This is a normal post That's a reasonable point
There's no mention about whether the carousel should be switching slides by itself over time, though. And that's what I find most annoying about those things.

Whenever you actually get tricked to reading something there, the bloody thing rotates before you finish. THAT is the biggest reason I completely ignore them, even the ones crafted as your link suggests.

This is a normal post I enjoyed the markup jokes.
"Carousels are effective at being able to tell people in Marketing/Senior Management that their latest idea is on the Home Page." is a very good point.

This is a normal post Depends on the context.
They make sense for a photography site. But probably not for much else.

This is a normal post I'd argue against even that.
They hide content from users in a way that a normal thumbnail gallery doesn't.

This is a normal post As a slideshow, obvs.
