It's the fact that the original artist has given his blessing that I find most depressing

But, whilst I'm sure this will be an unpopular view, isn't it just a case of "Singer Sings Song Shocker!"? Always has happened always will. I don't know, I guess i'd feel funny and have pause if it were one of my songs. But that's a dilemma I'm highly unlikely to run into.
I dunno I just always feel this sort of thing has far more to do with social identity than actual music. I'm being highly inarticulate today, I think I'll just shut up. I've written pages of very civil debate about this in the past, not feeling capable today.
Whichever way you swing though, its also worth bearing in mind that the degree to which his nod means anything or is his own nod at all depends entirely upon the nature of his publishing agreements and to what degree he signed his rights away. Which I guess you can argue was entirely within his control at the time.

people assume that X Factor contestants have no taste in music because they are forced to sing utter bilge and cover stuff that's popular.
Surely some of them must like 'good stuff'.
Either that or Cowell has decided all his artists are now going to do 'edgy' stuff (liek Leona Lewis doing 'Hurt')

They were essentially covering covers- Covering the Johnny Cash cover of 'Hurt', covering the Jeff Buckley cover of 'Hallelujah'.

it's what Cowell precieves as 'edgy'

It just tickled me that they've covered covers (I wasn't aware of 'hurt' being done)- it is the whole 'edgy' in quotation marks- making sure another artist has road-tested it already- pfft.

Yeah, Hurt was wierd.
For the first 30 seconds you think it's gonna use the NIN arrangement, and with her voice really low its quite disturbing... and then it ramps up into the typical brash, octaves all over the place, Leona lewis pap

He did a song for Coca Cola. Joss Stone covered fell in love with a girl. He likes money. Can't blame him really.

Therefore, I can forgive him anything.

generally the kiss of death for a career, so he'll take whatever comes his way now
To the best of my knowledge though, you can't stop someone doing a cover version as long as you get paid.
I'm no lawyer, but I'm sure I've heard that.
Can be the only explanation for things like Candy Flip's 'Strawberry Fields'

All I can ask is 1/ Why does Marcus Collins look so scared in that photo? & 2/ Who on earth convinced him that jumper was a good idea?
