Hip hop
No question, bar a very few exceptions it's fucking dismal these days and I'd be hard pressed to come home with a single record if I went out to buy some - but it's a huge mistake to think it was all brilliant back in the 80s. For every old skool classic there were 5 bollocks records, I should know - I bought them all. Yes, 'Whistle, 'Just Buggin' I'm looking at you, and all your rubbish mates.

I said hello to Jazzy Jeff once, in Deal Real records in Soho.
True - but also cool - story.
He's not all that 'jazzy' in real life. No zoot suit etc, none of that stuff. If anything he was like one of those 'rap' fellows you hear about.

Oo. It's a close call but I'm going to have to stick with my first answer.
Because I'm inately racist and cannot accept that a black man is worse than a white woman at rapping.

it's their natural rhythm
Edit: I was brought up in the home counties and actually believed this until my first Notting Hill carnival in the late 80s, when my 'black people are all really cool' theory was well and truly torpedoed for ever

I'm sure that there's much worse than that.
You just need to listen more carelessly.

Good new hiphop... Not sure these fulfil any of the criteria, but here you go: Big Calm, Bombing Bastards, Cryptik Souls Crew, Whatever the fuck this is by Eli.
Herbaliser did some OK stuff - pretty good live show, too. I'm also partial to a little Fun Lovin' Criminals, on occasion. Even Outkast, at a push.

Edan is the best current ish MC to my knowledge
I once spent a hilarious night with the Herbaliser chaps in Cork. We stole Grooverider's hash, namedrop fans

I saw some of Grooverider some time in the late 90s at Scumton Uni. Just awful. I left early. Maybe nicking his stash might have made it more bearable.
Last live music I saw was Jim Jones at the Thekla, courtesy of a recommendation from someone on here. They were really rather splendid.
( , Thu 29 Aug 2013, 20:42, closed)
Jim Jones is the best live act around.
When I was a kid I thought his first band Thee Hypnotics were the best thing ever and I followed them aroundlike a very gay lost sheep until they split up, probably in the hope of escaping me.

I was a bit gutted that they'd replaced the keyboard player who looks a bit like Lurch on the "Princess and the Frog" video. They had some tubby youngster on instead. He was good, but looked a bit out of place.
I suppose I should check out some of his older stuff.

Jim Jones has just remixed the new Depeche Mode single, apparently.
I'd imagine that this flies in the face of your sensibilities.

Yeah, there's loads of excellent hip hop these days.
Just avoid the chart shit, innit.
Death Grips and Odd Future are worth checking out.
Even ten years back there was superb stuff being put out by Mush and Def Jux.

But Monty...
It's just musical theft with no talent anywhere in sight.
Then again, seeing as the majority of the music plundered for rap 'music' is soul and funk, it's black on black crime. It's therefore expected and us white people are better off out of it.

There is good recent hip hop out these days
But yeah it is few and far between. I remember people saying how no good rap came out in the late 90's but looking back on it now there are some gems that stood out.
Good new hip-hop to me at least, would be People Under The Stairs, Q-Tip's album and mos Def's album (no matter how much of an arrogant prick he is). Admittedly you could say those three alone are recreating the best of the golden era, albeit with a modern edge.
I guess it's just hip-hop's overall sound these days that is so different (read: shite) compared to back then...
