Bought for 44k.
Decided to sell it in late 1999 for 54k as "Surely it can't keep going up in price for much longer and I'll cash in on ten grand".
Yeah, reckon I lost almost £80,000 compared to what it was worth 6 years later.

I expect in 10 years time it might be worth 300K that's the thing about house prices they go up, and you need/want to move.
If I had a pound for every time I've heard (read)someone getting confused/annoyed about this I'd have at least £20 by now

They're right, no doubt you would have had to buy somewhere else, which was cheaper than it would have been in a few years....All things being relative and all that.
