I agree. This is the problem - people seem to think that pronouncing the name of a place in the same way as the locals HAS to be correct. This is a fundamental mistake as most places have an English pronunciation. As you point out, we don’t say ‘ParEE’, we say Paris. We don’t say Munchen, we say Munich. We don’t say Espana, we say Spain. I pull my hair out when people tell me Basel in Switzerland is pronounced ‘Barz-el’, when in English it’s ‘Barl’.
