Freddy Woo writes, "My wife thinks calling the front room a lounge is common. Worse, a friend of hers recently admonished her daughter for calling a toilet, a toilet. Lavatory darling. It's lavatory."
My own mother refused to let me use the word 'oblong' instead of 'rectangle'. Which is just odd, to be honest.
What stuff do you think is common?

I cannot abide people who refer to Tesco as Tescos, terribly common.

It's because One says "I'm going to dad's..." or similar.
You know? The Plebs add the 's' because they're used to it.

I think its more due to the fact that people make the assumption tesco is a person, therefore they are going to - Tesco's...
Like Liberty of London, now one ever says they are going to Liberty, you're always gonig to Liberty's... it harks back to the good old days when Dave's store was on the corner.

In some cases, I agree:
Lidl's and Aldi's is plain wrong.
But what about Woolworth?
-To my ears, anyone who says, "Woolworth" is weird: It's Woolworth's, correct or not.

That's in Greece isn't it?
(my first GF used to pronounce is Tess-Coss, and refer to it as a Greek Isle - sad isn't it?)

so it's perfectly correct to end the name with an s.

Whenever I'm in London I try to visit Harrod.
Seriously though, this is on a par with people who refer to 'Cliff Richards' or 'Victoria Woods' even when they're looking at something where that name is WRITTEN DOWN IN FRONT OF THEM!!
