funnily enough, a mate of mine who still lives in the grim gay north was vaguely involved in the pride organisation
and allegedly one of the off-the-record policies of the council rep was to make it more hetero friendly.

Which seems to be missing the point so wildly that I can't actually get my head around it.

I agree with the first part as it's what I believe as well.
However you're not going to send every doubter to those places. What with whole nations condemning homosexuality there wouldn't be enough room. There was a time in England when it took extreme protest to get heard but I believe that time has passed and the over explicit sexual type of protest will only alienate the "recently allied". Best chance we've got of "converting" the next tranche of people is to drop the aggression and try friendliness.
