This is a question Narrow Escapes

IHateSprouts tells us they once avoided getting caught up in an IRA bomb attack by missing a train. Tell us how you've dodged the Grim Reaper, or simply avoided a bit of trouble.

9/11 nearly killed every American
Why is it that every single American you ever speak to was almost caught up in 9/11 or has a relative who 'was due to stay in the hotel there on that day but missed their flight' etc?

To be fair, I don't know all that many Americans personally, but the handful that I do know all seem to have some kind of connection to it. From the evidence of my small sample, it seems that every single American was due to be in the World Trade Centre at the time of the attacks.

Hah.
I thought the same.

Almost everybody in the UK was almost going to go to London and might have been on a circle line train on 7/7.

That's the ones that could still bring themselves to travel on the tube, after narrowly missing being burnt to a crisp at Kings cross.

Not me
I'd prefer to walk from Paddington to Lancaster Gate than go on the Circle Line.

When the towers fell...
...we lost The Most Useless Thing In The World (tm). At the top of the tower, in the visitor centre, there was a room containing a model of New York City.

Now, call me old fashioned, but it strikes me that the ONE place you don't need a model of a city is THE TOP OF THE TALLEST BUILDING IN IT!

And yes, if the attacks had happened just three years earlier, I would have been in the tower. Spooky.

Why is it that every single American you ever speak to was almost caught up in 9/11?
Because they are all grief thieves!!
(, Mon 23 Aug 2010, 15:40, closed)
Some of them are grief thieves in a more literal sense...
...remember the story about the fuck-nuggets that claimed that they lost family members on 9/11 to get hefty cash payouts?
(, Mon 23 Aug 2010, 19:31, closed)
No shit.
The one person I know who lost his fiance doesn't talk about it. The only time he's mentioned it in the two weeks since is to swear about the cuntiness and selfishness of the survivor's groups.

He turned down the money, so they banned him from all memorials.
(, Mon 23 Aug 2010, 15:57, closed)
Two weeks since...?

(, Mon 23 Aug 2010, 16:26, closed)
He's Jewish.
He had his period of grief.

He talks about her, not about it. He does mention the assholes who run the victims' organisations.
(, Mon 23 Aug 2010, 16:30, closed)
I take it he didn't lose her in the WTC in 2001
and 2 weeks is the official Jewish period of grief, and you're just illustrating a point about how people react to genuine grief rather than a sort of perverse reflected glory like the OP implies most Americans indulge in?
(, Mon 23 Aug 2010, 16:37, closed)
No.
Ah, I didn't really make myself clear. He did lose her in the WTC. I'm just saying that his reaction is normal and quite admirable. The mawkish sentimentality of those doing it in his 'honour' is rather disgusting.

I'm bringing him up (I don't really feel 'affected' anymore than anybody else who was in Dalston, E3 that day) to show that not all Yankees are chest-beating morons, but, perversely (and moreso,) to also show that those who 'speak' for the 'victims' are a bunch of idiots.

Some of these idiots don't even believe that any Jews died that day. Some of the people who gladly became rich from death and tragedy, who are fighting against the Muslim NYC community centre, who sit on Fox News and weep out words as the 'voice' of thousands of people genuinely don't believe that Jews died that day, despite being faced with the evidence.
(, Mon 23 Aug 2010, 16:49, closed)
Psssst.
Dalston isn't in E3.
(, Mon 23 Aug 2010, 17:13, closed)
Ah, oops.
That's just where I woke up.
(, Mon 23 Aug 2010, 17:41, closed)

But it happened more than 4 weeks ago.... maybe Im not reading it properly, but if it's been 2 weeks since the 2 weeks of grief ended, then that's 4 weeks. That's July 2010.
Sorry if Im just being dumb and not reading it properly!
(, Mon 23 Aug 2010, 17:46, closed)
Ah, no.
That was my stupid writing.

"Some of these idiots don't even believe that any Jews died that day."
This doesn't even make any sense as a viewpoint. So it was a Judeo-Muslim conspiracy, cause everyone knows they get along so well?

The stupidity and bigotry of some people buggers one right in the mind sometimes. :(

I'm the minority
Who knows no one at all associated with 9/11. I watched it on the tv at my local IRS office. I thought it was a put on job at first. I got to school and everyone was huddled around crying. I feel horribly sorry for everyone who was affected, but I won't cry over it, I don't, or didn't, know anyone. I live about 1300 miles south of NYC, give or takes a couple.
(, Mon 23 Aug 2010, 18:15, closed)
I was
in Japan halfway around the world and slept through the whole thing.
(, Tue 24 Aug 2010, 4:42, closed)
Personally
I fucking loved it, best TV ever.
(, Mon 23 Aug 2010, 19:04, closed)
Yeah
eat shit
(, Tue 24 Aug 2010, 6:02, closed)
Idiot
We watched it in our office and there was one dickhead who thought that it was funny because loads of 'fatcats' were dying. He was a twat as well. We sacked him soon after.
(, Tue 24 Aug 2010, 8:28, closed)
STOP
I'm shitting myself. Only 3,000 or so people died.

So fucking what.

That many die everyday, but as they are black and of little consequence, they don't make the news. Starving children or victims of genocide don't make good TV.
(, Tue 24 Aug 2010, 13:37, closed)
Whatever
Either you are just trying to provoke a reaction or are genuinely a cock. Ignore button here I come.

Found this on Wesley Snipes' Biography on imdb:
"His apartment was destroyed by the collapse of the World Trade Center's Twin Towers. He happened to have been delayed at the gym where he was working out, otherwise he would have been home at that moment."

And so the world contains Blade 2 and Blade Trinity.
I think we can safely say the terrorists won.
(, Mon 23 Aug 2010, 23:53, closed)
Blade 2 is awesome

(, Tue 24 Aug 2010, 9:27, closed)
No.
Because no.
(, Tue 24 Aug 2010, 9:47, closed)
I prefer it to the first one

(, Tue 24 Aug 2010, 10:37, closed)
I know that Seth McFarlane was due to be on one of the planes that hit the towers
But apart from that, no-one else springs to mind...
(, Tue 24 Aug 2010, 9:27, closed)
irony...
i used to know someone who was coming home from america just a week or so before 9/11 and the airport security started going through all their stuff because apparently a snorkel looked like a gun or something, but at the same airport a week later they managed to let several terrorists on who then destroyed the wtc :-S
