Onemunki says: We live in a world of genuine tragedy, starvation and terror. So, after hearing stories of cruise line passengers complaining at the air conditioning breaking down, what stories of sheer single-minded self-pity get your goat?

See Slashdot story with same title.
Those f-ing softies think "gas" is dear when it reaches $5/US gallon. Here it is already $8.44 per US Gallon, and has been for months.
Please, please, America, just get over yourselves, you precious little snowflakes.

You'll find that they're probably paying about the same in a lot of cases.

5 / 33 = 16 cents /mile
8.44 / 53 = 16 cents / mile

do something about it.
I can't sell my V8 and get a smaller diesel car, I did that 4 years ago.

You're probably paying less than the average yank.
And there is little they can do about it, what with the stigma surrounding diesels in the us.

but the point was, I'm paying as little as I ever will.
The Americans have a long way to go. They're still buying 3.2 litre V6's as 'economy' cars.
[edit]
10 years ago, Top Gear were scoffing merrily at the idea of them ever going anywhere near a diesel car. Most of us were too.

If Americans drive cars that use more fuel and that ups their MPG, that's their problem and the can change it. They still pay less per gallon of fuel, and that's the important measure because it's the one the driver has no control over.

Seriously, the Seppoes have this weird idea that 16 fluid ounces = 1 pint. So eight US pints = .8 UK gallons.
So they pay $6.25 for REAL gallons, as used by MEN. Then they burn it at 25 mpg.
Let's laugh and point at the colonials, kids!

Long run = 64.8 miles/gallon*
General driving = 49.2 miles/gallon
'Merkins have, up to now, never had an incentive to make their engines economical. Maybe now they'll learn!
* that's real Imperial gallons not these namby pamby colonial ones.

until your super-dooper variable vane turbo clogs up after 100,000 miles and suddenly have to shell out a grand on a replacement.

gets me about 400km. and cost about AUD$25 a pop. I put about $20 petrol in a month (it's dual-fuel and needs the petrol for the injectors).
The first autogas car I bought many years ago cost .20c a litre to fill. It's nearly quadrupled and we still export natural gas to the rest of the world.
Fuck!
