I stop and avoid people when walking, is it that much harder to do in a car?

Becauseit's a road. We do have right of way. If you want to cross the road, do it at a pedestrian crossing or wait until there's a decent gap in the traffic so you don't run the risk of getting hit or forcing a car to take evasive action.
