This is a question Hitchhiking and fare dodging

Epic tales of the thumb, the open road and getting robbed by hairy-arsed truck drivers. Alternatively, travelling for free like a dreadful fare-jumping cheat. Confess.

Spiders. Spiders in wing mirrors. They hitch and don't pay a damn penny.
A bloke I used to lift share with to work in Falmouth used to have his own pet spider. Not a tarantula in a glass case, the one that lived inside his wing mirror. Tirelessly spinning a web anew every day, he would prank it by flicking a ball of cig ash out into the web and laugh as the spider darted out to attach the 'fly', only to skulk off later when he found that it wasn't a nice juicy fly.

The next year when I had my own ride I acquired a hitch hiking spider of my own. Only this one wouldn't skulk behind the mirror, it sat square on the centre of the web. Even when I was driving along at 60 and the web was oscillating madly in the wind. I can only assume it was some sort of extreme sports spider that it was screaming 'I'VE NEVER FELT SO ALIVE!' at the top of its tiny spider voice.

We had a wing mirror spider for quite a while.
I don't like spiders, but he wasn't that big so I tolerated him. My soft-hearted wife insisted that we stop by the side of the road and 're-home' him in a hedge before we went through a car wash.

Hence the expression;
"If you don't like someone, let them go".

flies would punch holes straight through the web instead of being caught by it

Sorry, I should eloborate that the web was across the mirror on the rear side
so any flies on the road would smash into the front of the mirror first. I wonder if, after the vehicle stopped, Mister Spidey the Spider nipped out from the inside of the mirror with a straw to finish up the remains...

Awful pidgin English accent.
Anyone would think it was Alan Coren's Idi Amin diaries.

(it was the 1970s.)

Alan Coren on b3ta? Whatever next?
Victoria's description of his funeral is one of the most touching things I've ever read

Yeah, I'm old.
Shamed to say I enjoyed the mocking of the dictator, if not the way the pidgin mocked a nation of ex-colonials.

It was written by Alan Coren but performed by John Bird
I still have the album

I like door mirror spiders. I hate Team Spiders.

I've upgraded and sanctioned a web on the inside bottom
right corner of my windscreen. Obviously there's a limit to the amount of prey that would normally enter a vehical so to increase the odds of survival for my arachnid colleague I park with the windows open as often as I can. Must admit that her web building can be distracting while I'm driving but no more than a TomTom.
