Well - we do have the Geneva Convention.It only makes sense that they'd contact each other beforehand and agree what up is.
Otherwise it'd all be way too confusing.

And despite travelling at large fractions (or multiples) of light speed......they always ram each other at about 10mph relative.
But I suppose a 1-frame blur from stage right then an expanding cloud of plasma wouldn't create the right dramatic tension.
