This is a question Old stuff I still know

Our Ginger Fuhrer says that he could still code up a simple game idea in Amstrad Basic, while I'm your man if you ever need to rebuild the suspension on an Austin Allegro (1750 Equipe version). This stuff doesn't leave your mind - tell us about obsolete talents you still have.

I used to be able to get round the phone dial lock applied by my mum
by tapping the cradle to dial the number instead. It took a lot of concentration if your friend had lots of 8s and 9s in their number.

Utterly useless skill now.

Still works.
At least if you have a phone with a manual switch, and a landline.
BT landlines at least still support pulse dial.

Maybe useless now...
...but there was a real skill to it. Got such a beating when I got caught doing this!

Google Joe Engressia
A blind kid with perfect pitch, who learned how to whistle down the phone lines and control the exchange. The original hacker / phreaker god.

Dont now about UK, but in the US on a payphone, if you pick up the receiver, dial 991 (NOT 911, very bad to dial that) followed by the last four digits of the number to the payphone itself (should be written under the receiver) then quickly hang up, pick it up again, listen for a tone, then hang up again, within a few seconds it will start to ring.

For example, if you see the number of the phone is 555-8654, dial 9918654 instead.

Had lots of fun with this, doing it and running away, waiting for someone to pick it up and say hello.
