I saw a hand-blender on Amazon that won't break the bank
but I'd much prefer a slightly bigger-capacity basic blender so I can get soups nice and smooth.

Soups shouldn't be totally smooth. Just shove the hand blender in and blend it for a bit. Lumps are good
