What do you do APART FROM the internet? I'm looking for inspiration here - I'm not really supposed to have sat here all evening pissing about with you cunts.
(, Thu 28 Apr 2011, 20:09, 105 replies, latest was 15 years ago)
But you have real life friends who live close by.
Go and mingle.

And more excitingly, my pal from New Zealand is over here and I'm off to see her on Sunday. *glees*

Being between gainful employment
I can piss about on the internet in the evening without feeling I've wasted daylight hours.

£61 worth of plants this morning - garden is now starting to look the way I thought it should be when I bought the house.

Out with the dogs this afternoon - sunlight and shade in a bluebell wood. More life, light and shade than anything the internet can synthesise.

Re-reading "Main Street" by Sinclair Lewis - a book that has a peculiar resonance with b3ta.
(, Thu 28 Apr 2011, 20:34, Reply)
I'll give it a read next time I see it
EDIT: found it on project Gutenberg
(, Thu 28 Apr 2011, 20:37, Reply)
Lewis is my favourite author
Unfortunately he was a chronic alcoholic.

He'd stay sober when writing but about 75% of the way through each book you could sense that he wanted a drink, so the ends are always a bit of an anti-climax.

If you can find it try "It can't happen here." Incredible book to say it was written in 1936.
(, Thu 28 Apr 2011, 20:42, Reply)
can we turn this into a "what are you reading" thread?

I'm kind of reading history
www.amazon.co.uk/World-War-Z-Max-Brooks/dp/0715637037/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1304020993&sr=8-1

it's so much better than it sounds
(, Thu 28 Apr 2011, 21:03, Reply)
I saw that in the library
already had my quota of books though
(, Thu 28 Apr 2011, 21:06, Reply)
it was my third in a 3 for 2

mainly because The End of Mr Y had someone remarkably like me as a main character

www.amazon.co.uk/City-China-Mieville/dp/0330493108/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1304021342&sr=1-1
because it's China Meiville. Not read it yet...

I didn't actually want to read that but I got into about 10 pages of les miserables and wanted to kill myself

(, Thu 28 Apr 2011, 21:02, Reply)
I don't know, I got about 30 pages in and then her girlfriend took it to her room.
Just as well, it was quite technical and not very interesting to me.

yes
(, Thu 28 Apr 2011, 21:23, Reply)
I always liked those ones we had in our bookshop which were american imports
they'd have some painting of some woman in a posh frock and some dude in a suit, then a kind of secondary front cover in which the woman had her frock off her shoulder and the guy's shirt was undone or even off, shocking! They always made me laugh
(, Thu 28 Apr 2011, 21:30, Reply)
oh i hate those
I've grown into the ones with better covers, megan hart has some excellent covers

example
(, Thu 28 Apr 2011, 21:41, Reply)
heh
nearest thing I read to porn was probably Poppy Z Brite, but that's just a vampire book with a lot of sex in it
(, Thu 28 Apr 2011, 21:45, Reply)
heard of her but haven't read her
i suppose i am a bit particular about my porn
sounds stupid
but most of them actually do have great stories, especially Megan Hart

You know I'm going to say it
But I'll say it because I can.

I've stood on the grassy knoll, you know. Three times.

Because Dallas is my second favourite US city after Portland, Oregon.

It's a strange place
Kennedy was killed five years before I was born, and five thousand miles away, but it's an incredibly moving place to be.

Maybe because I expected to be moved. I don't know. Maybe it's where the concept of the media circus was born out of tragedy.

I'll go there again, and I suppose I'll feel the same sensation of a time and place again.
(, Thu 28 Apr 2011, 21:35, Reply)

I do a lot of cycling, I play tennis, poker, pool and cribbage, I drink whisky, I read books and as of this June I will be working as a freelance kite instructor in Newquay, Cornwall (I got offered a job last Sunday).

Revising for uni exams should really be higher on this list.
