Actually if I can stick up for swipey just a little*
I find books with foreign names in, like Dr.Zhivago, really hard to read as I forget who is who, i think it's because the names aren't set into my brain like western English names.

*tit gaz pending

I can say
that after 6 years living in England, I still have problems to remember English names when I'm introduced to people. I need to see them in written and even like that, I can barely remember how they're pronounced. I'm pretty good with names, in Spanish, but in English they are just like a chain of sounds or letters without any meaning.

RACIST!

Can you put it in 2 lines?
Or 3, I'm not picky.

I can't read all 2 threads now.

Rswipe was trying to deal with a document
and the fact that people kept changing the names they called themselves by throughout the document. No arguement from me, that would piss me right off. However, she (intentionally or otherwise) included the fact that they were Asian, which does make rather racist. I just pointed that out, however Al re-linked it in a rather "mountain out of a flogging dead horse molehill thing" way.

I don't think mentioning that the names are asian is racist it is mearly embellishing the story

(, Thu 19 May 2011, 14:34, Reply)
well, no it kind of does, by the definition of racism
however it appears that this debate for some reason is getting taken a shit load more seriously that any other faux-fight rswipe and I have so I'm stepping out of this one. Apologies but I'd rather she didn't flounce.

Honestly though
I don't see the difference between a story that says "a rude FAT man burped in my face on the bus" or "a rude ASIAN man burped in my face on the bus".

It is mearly a physical descriptor, and by making it out to be racist is a reason why people feel unable to talk about race, immigration or any other sensitive area without being called a racist. This breeds frustratsion and can ultimately lead to true racism. (See previous Labour government)

i did actually just give you a serious reply on that point
back over there.

which in fact naked ape has just summed up neatly.

As pennance
You should go out and show you're not a racist by having a Chinese takeaway. that should put the matter to rest.
(, Thu 19 May 2011, 14:41, Reply)
as have I
