On the other hand, if you were explicitly inviting us to do so, you ought to have used 'may' rather than 'can', I believe. I might be wrong though - would any grammar fans care to help out?

There was a teacher who would reply to "Can I go to the toilet?" with "Well, you're able to, but may you?".
I think can is able to and may is allowed to.

It's clearly implicit in what you said that you were requesting permission, not asking them if you were capable of doing it. I onlce asked at a ticket office if I could have a one day travel card and she said "You can buy one, you can't have it for nothing!" in a LOLwaki joking manner. I wished she had died.
