Unlurk
I have my dream job - it's research lecturer position. The good thing about this is that if i can bring in the money i could end up with my own research group and there's a chance i could make professor before i retire.
The down side is that i'm not very good at it! The grant success rates are about 5-30% and they're a nightmare to write :(
I do have plenty of time to lurk on here as a distraction from reading the oh so many papers i need to read though.

Alt - i'll listen to anything really

The other downside is that you are a Ranga.

A what now?

Ginga

Ah
Yes, this is distressingly true. I've not heard that term before though.

Aussie innit

(, Thu 16 Jun 2011, 9:32, Reply)
I heard it from a friend from Huddersfield.

(, Thu 16 Jun 2011, 9:33, Reply)
That maybe be so, but it's an aussie term of abuse
My favourite foreign term of abuse is the Spanish for disabled - "sub-normal" in a Spanish accent obviously

Are you Irish rich auburn ginger
or freckled, white eyebrowed and get burnt by strip lighting sort?
(, Thu 16 Jun 2011, 9:33, Reply)
Somewhere in the middle
I get burnt in about 10 minutes and have an abundance of freckles but i don't have the proper auburn hair. My son is extra ginger, fluorescently orange hair and skin as pale as snow. I worry about him starting big school, he's cute enough to pull it off at the moment.

Monty got it from Tim Minchin
He loves Tim Minchin
(, Thu 16 Jun 2011, 9:34, Reply)
You got AIDS from Tim Minchin

(, Thu 16 Jun 2011, 9:35, Reply)
Nooooooo! Not Ginger AIDS!
That's the worst of all the AIDS!
(, Thu 16 Jun 2011, 9:39, Reply)
Can anyone explain the appeal of Tim Minchin
Maybe I'm getting old, or maybe I just don't get it, or maybe I am too cynical, or maybe I'm right and they are wrong, but why do people find him funny? My brother loves him and went to see him live. I would rather pull my own teeth out.
(, Thu 16 Jun 2011, 9:49, Reply)
He is quite clever in his humour, but I don't tend to find him funny, aside from one song.

(, Thu 16 Jun 2011, 9:50, Reply)
I think he's funny
That's about the size of it, frankly
(, Thu 16 Jun 2011, 9:51, Reply)
He's not funny at all.
'Musical comedy' is shit and he's a ranga cunt.
(, Thu 16 Jun 2011, 10:01, Reply)
He needs to brush his fucking hair

(, Thu 16 Jun 2011, 10:03, Reply)

OH it's a LADY penguin.
I don't spend anywhere near enough time here these days. Except for these days. I'm approaching 17,000, what the fuck have I done with my life?
(, Thu 16 Jun 2011, 9:35, Reply)
Pffft ok you've got twice as many as me, no offence intended.

(, Thu 16 Jun 2011, 9:35, Reply)
*awaits some kind of penguin pandatron*

(, Thu 16 Jun 2011, 10:01, Reply)
Woo
It's true. Although i have generally had very little to contribute in the past, just a bit of a rant.
(, Thu 16 Jun 2011, 9:36, Reply)
You are in good company there.

(, Thu 16 Jun 2011, 9:45, Reply)
Yes, they are a nightmare to write.
Success rate is dependent on the field and how well you write them, though. It's not just an arbritrary percentage. You have a lot of control over how likely the success is.

Don't read papers. That's what you have PhD students and postdocs for.
