ooh, you guys know about this shit
I want to purchase a netbook. Mostly it'll be used for writing stuff and interweb surfing so it doesn't need to be super-fly (I've got a real computer for that). Does need to be fairly tough (I'm clumsy) and cheap (I'm stingey)

any recommendations?
(, Thu 4 Aug 2011, 12:32, 5 replies, latest was 15 years ago)
Yeah, get a laptop instead.
A ten inch screen sucks for browsing the web.
(, Thu 4 Aug 2011, 12:33, Reply)
I want it more portable
it definitely a netbook I want
(, Thu 4 Aug 2011, 12:34, Reply)
A tablet?

(, Thu 4 Aug 2011, 12:34, Reply)
nah - want a keyboard

doesn't that defeat the point of a tablet computer?
It's probably gong to be typing I do the most of anyway

that and arsing around with this plan I have for webcams
(, Thu 4 Aug 2011, 12:43, Reply)
Well they all have tiny screens
and processors that can't really handle video, so one's much the same as another.
(, Thu 4 Aug 2011, 12:34, Reply)
Rubbish, my 486 could handle video and my 600 mhz could play dvd
I watch video on my netbook all the time
(, Thu 4 Aug 2011, 12:36, Reply)
my 386 almost could
if you asked it nicely and sacrificed a chicken to the computer gods
(, Thu 4 Aug 2011, 12:39, Reply)
Streaming?
Maybe it's the network card that sucks.
(, Thu 4 Aug 2011, 12:40, Reply)
Regardless netbooks are fucking bent
and no good at all for the one thing they're named for. Browsing the internet.
(, Thu 4 Aug 2011, 12:41, Reply)
I disagree
Epecially as more and more people are browsing on their fucking phones. I find the 10 inch screen fine to use its only a bit small that a 13 inch mac. I've been using it for a while and its fine, the synaptics touchpad drivers make browsing easy because you can easily zoom in and out
(, Thu 4 Aug 2011, 12:53, Reply)
I expect a five inch phon screen to not be capable of displaying
a high enough resolution to be able to display an entire webpage and even if they did, you would struggle to read the text.

On something that is supposedly designed for web browsing though, it's fucking stupid.
(, Thu 4 Aug 2011, 13:01, Reply)
Like I said, I have no problem browsing on it at all

(, Thu 4 Aug 2011, 13:03, Reply)
Well it annoys the piss out of me
So ner.
(, Thu 4 Aug 2011, 13:05, Reply)
Yup streaming both from the web and from my server

(, Thu 4 Aug 2011, 12:42, Reply)
What size and what's your budget?
No netbook is really tough by any stretch of that, you might be able to get away with dropping them on a bed or sofa but they'll die if you drop them on the floor.
(, Thu 4 Aug 2011, 12:34, Reply)
I've seen some around £160-70
but there's no way I'm buying from PC world. That seems a reasonable amount to pay. If it's worth it I may spend a bit more - I have a grown up job and everything now
(, Thu 4 Aug 2011, 12:35, Reply)
They'll be shit, you need to spend £250ish to get one that wont barely run for 2 months then be shit.

(, Thu 4 Aug 2011, 12:39, Reply)
yeah?
any examples of good ones?
(, Thu 4 Aug 2011, 12:41, Reply)
You can get a shit laptop for 250 quid
which will be infinitely better than the best netbook.
(, Thu 4 Aug 2011, 12:42, Reply)
this may be true, but since it's bigger
I won't carry it round, thus making it a waste of time.
(, Thu 4 Aug 2011, 12:46, Reply)
So you're actively looking to spend the same amount of money
on something you know will be worse because it'll be slightly bigger?

OK. Enjoy your netbook, then.
(, Thu 4 Aug 2011, 12:48, Reply)
worse for some things
better for others. A proper real computer would be better, but I have on of those and they won't fit in my bag. Seriously, this thing won't be needed to do any heavy work
(, Thu 4 Aug 2011, 12:50, Reply)
have you thought about spending less money on a bigger bag?

(, Thu 4 Aug 2011, 12:45, Reply)
If you get that remove Windows 7 Starter
and put the proper windows 7 on. Gaz me if you need help obtaining a copy
(, Thu 4 Aug 2011, 12:49, Reply)
cheers - I may do that
i have a real copy for this computer (teacher edition, it was cheaper), but I don't think I'm allowed it on anything else
(, Thu 4 Aug 2011, 12:56, Reply)
My Acer Aspire One is lovely
runs windows 7 without any problems
(, Thu 4 Aug 2011, 12:35, Reply)
Oh and my daughter has dropped it loads of times
Its fine
(, Thu 4 Aug 2011, 12:35, Reply)
what's the battery life like?

(, Thu 4 Aug 2011, 12:38, Reply)
4-6 hours depending on use
3 hours if I'm watching video. Its 2 years old now though, did more when it was new.
(, Thu 4 Aug 2011, 12:39, Reply)
I got one. It's crap.
I expected slow but it's positively snail-like.
(, Thu 4 Aug 2011, 12:37, Reply)
oh :(
I won't get one like that then
(, Thu 4 Aug 2011, 12:38, Reply)
On thing you must do when you get one is wipe it and reinstall windows when you get it
they come with loads of shit installed that slows them down loads
(, Thu 4 Aug 2011, 12:41, Reply)
yeah - I heard that about
pretty much all computers these days.
(, Thu 4 Aug 2011, 12:42, Reply)
I had mine reinstalled.
It's still shit.
(, Thu 4 Aug 2011, 12:45, Reply)
Should have got me to do it then

(, Thu 4 Aug 2011, 12:49, Reply)
When I'm down your neck of the woods, I'll bring it with me : )

(, Thu 4 Aug 2011, 12:56, Reply)
Come to Cornwall often?

(, Thu 4 Aug 2011, 13:01, Reply)
If it's something to take about with you, consider the 'tablet' PCs, they're good for pissing about on the internet, you can use them easierly on public transport, they fit in your bag easier, much better battery life.
I wouldn't recomend a tablet to replace a main computer, but as something for pissing about on the web when you're out'n'about, they're great. And you can get keyboard-cases for them too.
(, Thu 4 Aug 2011, 12:46, Reply)
I'm quite tempted by the tablet PCs.
Mainly so I canuse it to draw on. I tried a very basic graphics tablet once, but it was shit.
(, Thu 4 Aug 2011, 12:57, Reply)
Get an iPad !!!!!

(, Thu 4 Aug 2011, 13:03, Reply)
You seem to be confusing me with someone who's made of money.
Do these tablets run photoshop without too many problems?
(, Thu 4 Aug 2011, 13:04, Reply)
no

(, Thu 4 Aug 2011, 13:06, Reply)
Well, that's not good enough.
Any suggestions? At the moment I've got a scanner and do my colouring in with strong liners. I'd much prefer to be able t scribble directly into PS though.
(, Thu 4 Aug 2011, 13:09, Reply)
Photoshop, get a half decent laptop. Glossy screen.
Might be a pain with sunlight and reflections but you get a better quality image
(, Thu 4 Aug 2011, 13:14, Reply)
I have one of those
but I was talking more in terms of graphics tablets or touch screens. Or is that what you meant?
(, Thu 4 Aug 2011, 13:17, Reply)
Oh ok I have Wacom graphic tab and it's super

(, Thu 4 Aug 2011, 13:22, Reply)
are they expensive?

(, Thu 4 Aug 2011, 13:28, Reply)
Ummmm dunnoooo
