We (as a planet, generally) seem to be getting more and more information about the space outside our planet, but are losing the ability to do anything about it.

Even it were possible to colonise Mars, the cost and the time it would take make it completely out of the question. Unless they manage a multinational joint venture, which doesn't seem likely, considering how much everyone hates and distrusts everyone else. And most of us don't have the money to spare for space-faring research.
