Even with my limited knowledge of religious ideas I am aware that it does not refer to retribution or rough justice, and is not an instant response, whatever former Beatles may sing about it.

Whichever religion's version of Karma you subscribe to, none of them describe it as a form of retribution and certainly not instantaneous.
Generally it refers to how you personally will progress in the cycle of Samsara.
